What is the Kaizen Fair?

What is the Kaizen Fair?

A Kaizen Fair is a celebratory event where teams meet and enter into competition by showcasing their team’s improvement ideas against other peer teams. Oftentimes, this Fair is held in a local environment where each of the competing teams can invite colleagues. All Kaizen Fair attendees witness the professional achievements of their colleagues in a competitive but fun environment.

The competition is based on who can follow the PDCA process (Plan-Do-Check-Act) with the greatest discipline to yield business results for our customers, Dover and the extended community.

The “A3”standard format (11" X 17" paper) is used to show and communicate their work. During Dover’s Kaizen Fair, we will showcase the best of each segment’s problem-solving methodology.

How do we compete in the Kaizen Fair?

How do we compete in the Kaizen Fair?

  1. For ALL teams, a properly documented A3 (using the form which can be found in the “Conference Expectations" section), AND
  2. For ALL teams on Day 1, there will be a tradeshow format display of A3s (12 per segment)
  3. For the 20 finalists (5 per segment), a video displaying the problem, logic, and resolution of the problem you resolved!

Organize Your Kaizen “Story”into these 9 steps:

  1. Problem Statement
    Clear, concise, measurable and with a standard and deviation from this standard
  2. Understanding the Circumstances
    Demonstrated going to Gemba and usage of CI tools
  3. Goal Statement
    SMART goal aligned with problem statement
  4. Cause & Effect Analysis
    Potential root causes identified using CI tools
  5. Hypothesis Testing & Data Collection
    Clearly stated hypothesis and usage of data / logic to get to root cause
  6. Countermeasures
    Based on principles of the CI house
  7. Results
    Before and after results show validation of countermeasure
  8. Sustainment
    Systemic approach to sustaining long-term gains
  9. Share the achievements
    Celebrated success and shared learning across organization



  1. Each segment can submit up to 12 A3s (5 of which are chosen as finalists by their segment for the competition in Houston). These team members are welcome to send any/all of these team members to Houston in May 2017.
  2. Day 1 will feature ALL A3s submitted from each segment (up to 48).
  3. Day 2 will feature the formal competition with the 20 finalists from all 4 segments.
  4. There will be 1st and 2nd prizes for each segment and 6 (six) People’s Choice Awards will be given.

Conference Expectations

Conference Expectations:

  1. Prepare a 3-5 minute video to explain your PDCA / A3 Team Improvement (ONLY for the 20 finalists).
  2. Download the A3 form (XLSX)
  3. Submit completed A3s by e-mail to one of the following:

    For Dover Engineered Systems: Juan Carrera

    For Dover Refrigeration & Food Equipment: Joshua Jensen

Video requirements

Video requirements:

Segments must submit their completed videos by April 28, 2017.

  1. 3-5 minutes in length
  2. Less than 2 GB in size
  3. HD resolution of 1080 x 720 or 1920 x 1080
  4. File format = .mov
  5. Upload your video to the following URL:
    1. Please include your Dover Segment and Operating company name in the subject line
    2. Please include your Kaizen Team name and your contact information in the message body of the submission form
    3. Choose the ‘Select File’ button to navigate to your video, then select ‘open’
    4. Select the ‘Send it’ button to submit your video

Segments must submit their completed A3s no later than April 14, 2017.

Note: Only the 20 finalists (5 per segment) will need to submit videos.
